[R6RS] Really trivial I/O question

Can anyone provide a rationale why WRITE-CHAR isn't called
DISPLAY-CHAR? Looking at:
http://zurich.csail.mit.edu/pipermail/rrrs-authors/1985-March/000058.html
it seems that it was DISPLAY-CHAR originally, which in turn suggests
that the change was intentional.
The related question, of course, is whether a procedure to output a
string (or a byte vector or a whatever) should be called WRITE-STRING
or DISPLAY-STRING.
