Uh... I didn't mean to solicit such an apology and, actually,
think it might be misplaced (if you'll forgive me).
Discussions on a list like this are both necessarily and, one
hopes, beneficially "performative" -- there's a broader
audience to always keep in mind.
The people who actually engage in the discussion already
have communication problems. People use different
vocabularies and express themselves in different modes.
It is tricky to sort out the genuine controversies from the
genuine miscommunications. It is outright hard to
conceive of, let alone explicitly describe, the divergent
premises that people bring to the discussion.
And if its that hard to speak well just among those
of us who are speaking, imagine what a broad range
of interpretations we must be generating in the silent
majority of readers!
All I meant, about square circles and pink unicorns,
is that I think you (and Joe) expressed some points
sufficiently lucidly that, if my goal is to mix it up a bit
with the aim of improving overall communication --
I got nothing to add. I couldn't figure out any way
to or any need to try to prompt further clarification
and had no more of my own thoughts on the topic to
contribute.
So... please don't be fearful about stating the "obvious"
when you feel like it can help. In my view, it is
often a very valuable way to indirectly convey good
perspectives.
